Planting Season: Crop Progress Report #8

The USDA Crop Progress report showed that corn planting advanced 9% this week to get to 92% planted. This compares to the average trade estimate at 96%. It gets tricky because when farmers finally decide they are done planting, even if they did not get all of their corn acres planted, they are counted as100% planted. Illinois was reported at 88% and Indiana at 84%.  Corn emergence was at 79% which is 18% behind normal.

The corn condition rating for the season that was released today shows 59% good-to-excellent. This compares to 59% good-to-excellent last week and 78% last year.

For soybeans, nationwide planting was reported at 77% up 17% from last week. The five-year average is at 93%. The problem is in the eastern Corn Belt where I would estimate farmers still have to plant about 15 million acres. With all the rain most farmers will not be able to resume planting until early July.
