2019 Commodity Classic Recap

I went to my first American Soybean Association annual meeting (pre Commodity Classic) in August of 1974.  I have attended almost every Commodity Classic since then. I can say I have a historic perspective.

My observations over the years have changed.  Many generations of farmers are now attending. It’s important that all members of the farm business continue to learn.  Farmers are looking for solutions to stay current with farming changes and make their business more profitable.  The attendees asked great questions when they stopped by our booth and at both of my presentations. The overall mood was better than I expected, especially for the corn and soybean farmers. Wheat farmers were shocked at the recent 90 cent collapse in wheat prices.  Hog and dairy producers were wondering when they may finally get back to any kind of profit level.

On my flight back it was a bright, sunny, and very cold day. I have never seen the snow cover as far south as this year. It looked white all the way from southern Illinois to Minnesota where I was greeted with a -15 temperature and – 30 wind chill. Once again Commodity Classic was great chance to connect with farmers.
